Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas)

Nitrous oxide/oxygen (N20-02) is a blend of two gases — oxygen and nitrous oxide.A fitted flavored mask is placed over the nose and as the patient breathes normally, uptake occurs through the lungs. At the end of the procedure the patient is placed on straight oxygen which they will breath for about 5 minutes and the effects are eliminated and has no lingering effects.

Nitrous oxide/oxygen is perhaps the safest sedative in dentistry. It is well tollerated, has a rapid onset, is reversiblie, can be adjusted in various concentrations and is non allergenic. The patient will be capable of responding to a question or request. It may also be used in combination with other sedative agents.

You will experience a sense of well-being and relaxation.Since it may produce a feeling of giddiness or euphoria,it is often called “laughing gas”.

There are many advantages to using Nitrous Oxide

  • The depth of sedation can be altered at any time to increase or decrease sedation.
  • There is no after effect .
  • Inhalation sedation is safe with no side effects on your heart and lungs, etc.
  • Inhalation sedation is very effective in minimizing gagging.
  • It works rapidly as it reaches the brain within 20 seconds.

Reasons to not use Nitrous Oxide

You should not utilize Nitrous Oxide if you have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Though there are no other major contraindications to using nitrous oxide, you may not want to use it if you have emphysema, exotic chest problems, M.S., a cold or other difficulties with breathing.
